LAUNDRY & CARE ADVICE

Here we have gathered information about our different types of materials and how you can best take care of your home textiles to increase their lifespan. In order to maintain the structure and luster of the textiles, it is therefore important that you take care of them carefully and follow the advice given for each individual product. In this way, you can enjoy your textiles for many years to come and contribute to a sustainable lifestyle.

    LINEN

Linen is an easy-care and durable natural fiber that lasts a long time and ages gently and it becomes more and more beautiful with time. The more it is washed and used – the softer and shinier it becomes. First of all, we recommend that you air your textiles in linen as it is more gentle on the fibers. Linen can be washed in a washing machine at 40 degrees, but always follow the individual recommendations on the product as seams, prints and embroidery can also be affected by how the laundry is done. It is important to keep in mind that linen can shrink up to 10%.

    WOOL

Wool is a durable fiber that is incredibly good at repelling dirt and moisture and is often used for carpets and rugs. Because the wool is so good at repelling dirt, you do not need to wash wool textiles as often. The dirt settles as a layer on the wool because it contains natural fats and can advantageously be aired outdoors when it is a little damp, then the wool almost washes itself. Remember to never rub on a stain, but wipe gently with a cloth. Never tumble dry wool textiles, just hang them to dry.

When spilling on a wool mat, gently wipe off (absolutely do not rub) the liquid with a microfiber cloth, then gently wipe the stain with a towel with warm water and soap. Finish by wiping with water only and a dry cotton cloth. In case of severe stains, you should get it to a carpet cleaner.

All wool has a tendency to pluck over time and the finer the wool, the more sensitive it is. We recommend avoiding high loads on wool blankets, do not use the blankets as a seat cushion or to dress the sofa with. If you want to soften your wool blankets again, brush them with a steel comb.

    JUTE

Jute is a natural material that is incredibly durable and is therefore perfectly suited as a rug. The material is a very good alternative from an environmental perspective as it is completely biodegradable and can be recycled several times. Jute rugs give a lovely and cozy feeling to the room and can also be used outdoors on patios and balconies. But protect it from rain and moisture under a roof. Vacuum your jute rug regularly on both sides and turn it regularly for a longer life. In case of spillage on a jute rug, wipe it off immediately with a light-absorbent cloth until the moisture is gone. Jute do not tolerate water washing.

    VELVET

Velvet is actually the name of the weaving technique and not the material, but today you can buy velvet fabrics in different types of materials. Svanefors uses durable polyester velvet of the highest quality and it has an incredibly fine and high luster. The disadvantage of velvet is that it attracts dust and hairs and requires you to roll it often. If you have velvet furniture, you can often vacuum it with a soft nozzle. Do not press too hard, but remove what lies on the surface of the fabric.

When spilling on velvet fabric, be sure to wipe the stain gently with an absorbent cloth to avoid discoloration. We recommend that you air the fabric outdoors on dump days to freshen up the fabric. You can wash the velvet in a washing machine at 40 degrees, but always follow the individual recommendations on the product as seams, prints and embroidery can also be affected by how the washing is done. If you are going to wash the velvet fabric on your larger furniture, we recommend dry cleaning.

If you are going to iron your velvet product, you must do it on the backside and on low heat, preferably with a steamer.

    COTTON

Cotton is a textile fiber and comes from plants in the cotton genus. Cotton is one of the world’s most widely used textile materials for its good durability, moisture-absorbing fiber and its soft feel. However, it requires large amounts of water and pesticides during cultivation. Cotton can be washed in a washing machine at 60 degrees, but always follow the individual recommendations on the product as seams, prints and embroidery can also be affected by how the laundry is done.

If you have spilled something on your cotton mat and are going to clean it, do not rub on the stain but soak up excess liquid with a dry microfiber cloth before you gently wipe it off with a wet towel with a little soap. Then wipe it gently with a wet towel without using too much water. In case of severe stains, you should return it to a carpet cleaner.

    MARTINDALE

Martindale describes how durable a fabric is and is tested by spinning a fabric-covered plate against the fabric and seeing how many turns it can handle before going a few stitches. The higher the Martindale value, the more strong the fabric. It is often said that fabrics for the home environment should have a value of more than 15,000 yards and the value of fabrics in a public environment should be 30,000 yards. If you are going to change a piece of furniture, we recommend that you use a fabric intended for furniture. On the one hand, you want a good enough martindale, but you should also keep in mind that a fabric can be stretched when you sit on it and then the fabric looks puffy after use.
